UNISON South West
Lesbian & Gay Members Self Organsiation

Branch Contact Scheme
We have now launched the Branch Contact Scheme. This is where we have local lesbian and gay members in their own branches, acting as a local contact for other members in their area of where they work.

Here are some questions, answered.

Do I have to be 'Out' in my Branch?
Ideally Yes, with accordance to UNISON policy we ask that you are ‘out’ to at least one member of your Branch Committee/Executive. This is so because then you can claim for expenses incurred in fulfilling your role.
What does the Branch Contact cover?
Here is a brief list of what a branch contact would cover, but this is not an exhaustive list. Things like dealing with homophobia in the workplace, harassment in the workplace and supporting members who wish to ‘come out’ in the workplace.
What happens if I can’t deal with the question?
First, don’t worry. You will have the support of the Regional Co-Chairs, the National Rep’s and the Committee’s Organising Assistant; that’s what we’re here for. If in the event that we can’t answer the question we will find out for you.
What about Training?
Yes, training is provided. We are currently in negotiations with the regions Education & Training Committee to provide training on becoming a Branch Contact. We are trying to arrange further training.
Well we hope this has answered some of your questions, if there are any others please get in contact with us and we will try to answer them. If they are common questions we will update this site to help other decide if they want to become Contacts.
